What Happens When You Slow Down: A Guided Photography Experience at Bailey's Trail System
A guided photography walk through Wayne National Forest with ORCA Ohio, September 2026.
What is a guided photography experience?
A guided photography experience is a small-group outdoor walk led by a working photographer. It's not a classroom workshop. There's no lecture at the trailhead. Learning happens on trail, in real time, as participants notice things and ask questions. Camera settings, composition, light, and storytelling all come up in context, when they're actually relevant to what's in front of you.

Where did this take place?
The Bullfrog Loop at Bailey's Trail System, Wayne National Forest, near Millfield, Ohio. The loop is 1.4 miles, rated low difficulty, and offers a mix of forest terrain, old-growth trees, and varied ecology. It's part of the broader outdoor recreation corridor managed by the Outdoor Recreation Council of Appalachia (ORCA Ohio).

What was the experience like?
Two participants, Mary and Sam, joined me for an afternoon session starting at 3:00 PM. We hiked at a relaxed pace, stopping whenever something caught someone's eye. Rachel, an ORCA naturalist, walked with us and provided ecological and historical context for the forest, which changed how everyone was seeing and photographing it.
The session started under flat overcast light and opened up about an hour in when directional sun broke through the clouds. Watching the landscape shift in real time was one of the better unplanned lessons of the afternoon.
Conversations covered camera settings and gear, composition, color theory, software and editing, and bigger questions around intent and storytelling. What are you actually trying to say with a photograph? Who is it for?

What kind of camera do you need?
Any camera. A phone works. A dedicated camera gives you more control over light and depth of field, which becomes part of the conversation on trail.

Will there be more sessions?
Yes. Future sessions at Bailey's Trail System are planned seasonally, including a winter outing to photograph the forest under snow. Events are listed on ORCA Ohio's calendar at orcaohio.com.
