Cuyahoga Valley National Park

An Origin Story

Some of the earliest portraits in this project were created inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a place that shaped my understanding of what Portraits of Adventure could become. While not an official partnership, these images show the beginnings from which this projects visual language has developed. CVNP is where I learned to slow down, pay attention, and recognize the depth people bring to the landscape, it largely revealed the whole story of outdoor and open spaces. This section gathers portraits made within the park, a place that continues to influence how I see connection, environment, and the people who move through them.

When I moved to Ohio in 2023, CVNP became my introduction to the state. I did not realize how close it sat to so many communities stretching from Cleveland down to Akron and Canton. The park offers access to the outdoors for thousands of people who otherwise might not have the time, resources, or opportunity to reach wilder places. Coming from Colorado, where most of my adult hiking took place, I was not used to seeing such a wide range of people on the trail. CVNP felt different. It felt open. It felt used. And that felt right.

I noticed hikers in tennis shoes, families in everyday clothing, people carrying whatever they had rather than whatever an outdoor retailer said they needed. It was humbling to see. I grew up without money for branded gear, and being on these trails felt full circle in a way. It reminded me that adventure has never required the perfect outfit or the perfect destination. It only requires a willingness to step outside and be present.

CVNP also introduced me to a kind of diversity I had not experienced in one shared outdoor space. Not just diversity in age, skin color, or background, but diversity in belief, life experience, and perspective. The trails brought together people who might never cross paths elsewhere. It made the park feel less like a scenic escape and more like a community landscape, a shared place that reflects the people who move through it.

The park’s accessibility plays a big role in that. CVNP is one of the few national parks that does not charge an entrance fee, which removes a barrier many people face when seeking time in nature. The park also works alongside local and regional partners, including Cleveland Metroparks and other agencies, to protect land, maintain trail systems, and expand access. While CVNP holds deep natural and cultural history, it is also a relatively young national park. It was established as a National Recreation Area in 1974 and redesignated as a National Park in 2000. That history reinforces its purpose as a place where people come first, where use and protection coexist.

For Portraits of Adventure, Cuyahoga Valley National Park became the first landscape where I truly saw how everyday people shape a place as much as the place shapes them. It remains a grounding force in the project and a reminder that meaningful adventure can happen anywhere that people show up with curiosity and intention.

People are the story. Make them visible.

Employees, community members, customers, they’re the ones who give your work meaning.

Shelby

Cuyahoga Valley National Park | March 2024

Shelby recently relocated to Ohio from Northern Illinois. She has a deep respect for animals, both domestic and wild. While taking breaks from her hike she enjoys spotting wildlife roaming in the forest, as well as getting up close and personal with the “critters”. She carries a macro lens that attaches to her camera phone to take pictures of what she finds. Recently, she’s been using a DSLR to help capture and document her adventures on the trail.

This was a special hike for Shelby, as she was celebrating 30 years of life on this planet. What a fantastic way to spend your 30th!

Before hiking @cuyahogavalleynationalpark, Shelby hiked her local state parks of @starvedrockstatepark and @mathesinstatepark. Thank you, Shelby for joining me in our adventures on the trail!

Andy & Carol

Indigo Lake, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | June 2025

Andy and Carol have been working in the area with the Girl Scouts, volunteering their time and expertise for some time now. They love setting up their telescope for the scouts to peer through and discover the constellations up close, and how vast our skies really are. Andy and Carol had a lot of fun during the recent full solar eclipse! While at the June Elevation event put on by @forcvnp, Andy and Carol had their telescope set up so we could all get a glimpse of the sun up close and personal. The magnification of their telescope is so powerful, Andy was continuously realigning in order to keep the sun in the sights!

Janet

Blue Hen Falls Trail, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | February 2024

All bundled up, Janet braved the cold to spend time with her family on this beautiful day in @cuyahogavalleynps. Because family is so important to her, both parties committed to meeting halfway to spend time together. Halfway just so happened to be a (*hard*) trail at CVNP. This didn't stop her, as she had all the support she needed by her side. Janet likes to go for walks on a local path by her home, so it was certainly a treat for her to experience a new trail, and most importantly, spend time with family. She was very sweet, and showed great interest in the camera as well as shared her experience making pictures. She now feels encouraged to take a photo class to get back into it, go Janet!

Jill & Craig

Blue Hen Falls, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | February 2025

Jill and Craig made a special weekend trip down to Ohio just to check out @cuyahogavalleynps over the weekend. For some time now they’ve been on a mission to check off as many National Parks as they can, with a combined total of about 14. While Jill has bagged more than Craig, they are both eager to continue exploring our great @nationalparkservice

Megan

Cuyahoga Valley National Park | January 2025

5.5 miles in, Megan hikes a local trail in @cuyahogavalleynps. A transplant from Texas, she started hiking during the COVID-19 outbreak. After a short break, she is getting back into her hiking routine. Megan was most excited to see the illusive sun returning from a month long vacation here in NE Ohio.

Dana & Rene

Blue Hen Falls, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | February 2025

Dana and Rene live in Ohio, but have traveled extensively in search of adventure on the trail, this weekend at @cuyahogavalleynps Often they backpack, spending multiple days on the trail. Favoring the cooler months allows them to avoid higher traffic, mosquitoes, and warmer than preferred temperatures.

Jeff

Ledges Trail, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | March 2024

Jeff found himself, revisiting an old trail he hiked often while on business trips to the area. Fascinated by geology, the exposed sandstone formations makes this one of his favorite places in @cuyahogavalleynationalpark. Todays trip sparked past memories and a reenergized feeling Jeff carries, that of being one with nature and all that surrounds.

Dave

Blue Hen Falls, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | February 2025

Dave loves to travel with his camera. He says it’s his favorite way to remember where he’s been. He likes to return to this particular trail in @cuyahogavalleynps to see the changes the seasons impose on Blue Hen Falls. It’s always fun running into another photographer on the trail.

Jenny

Buttermilk Falls, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | February 2025

Hiking with her dog, Joshua, Jenny loves getting out on the trail for fresh air and great exercise. Joshua spent the first 3 years of his life on the streets of Kenya, but now has a loving home here where he gets to hike in @cuyahogavalleynps

Brad & Haley

Boston Run Trail, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | February 2024

Brad and Haley moved from Korea to the US about two months ago. They were regular hikers in Korea, where they were used to significant elevation change on their hikes. Luckily, they’ve found a couple of trails they enjoy here in @cuyahogavalleynps that feature those climbs they are looking for!

David & Dawn

Towpath, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | February 2024

David and Dawn on their second hike of 2024 with this unseasonably warm Ohio day in February. With a goal to complete the CVNP4 challenge in @cuyahogavalleynps , they'll be better prepared for their adventures out west later this year. With retirement just around the corner, David and Dawn aim to stay active out on the trails.

Jennifer & Brandon

Ledges, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | March, 2024

Jennifer and Brandon just relocated to Ohio from North Carolina where they spent most of their free time on the trails and fishing in the mountains. Since moving to Ohio a few months ago, Brandon is already scoping new spots to spend his time trout fishing, and they are blazing all the trails they can find.

Jim & Chris

Kendall Lake, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | March 2024

Jim (L) and Chris (R) have their sights set on backpacking the John Muir trail this Summer, but fist they have some training to do. 🏋️‍♂️ Stuffed in their packs is a mix of coats, exercise weights, protein mix, water, and weighted bits they have handy to help prepare for their Summer excursion. As a trail runner, 🏃🏼‍♂️ Jim had already ran 12 miles before meeting up with Chris and throwing on the training pack for the rest of the day. A couple of good natured cards, Jim and Chris both live near @cuyahogavalleynationalpark , and already have their next training day planned.

Melissa

Ledges, Cuyahoga Valley National Park | May 2025

Melissa is a 5th grade teacher currently making her way through each national park. @cuyahogavalleynps marks her 9th with number 10 soon to follow. Melissa came up for a solo trip and explored other trails within the park including Blue Hen, and Brandy wine Falls the previous day.
