Ellen Euclid came out to Brandywine Ski Resort to volunteer after moving back to Ohio in 2016. Growing up in the 90s and learning to ski out here with 3 Trackers when she was a kid she reflects on what the program taught and provided her, and now loves giving back.
She comes out multiple times a week, Sundays and Tuesdays. It’s twenty minutes from her house, which she considers the whole point since the mountains in Colorado and Vermont are not. That proximity turns skiing from a once-a-year trip into a regular part of winter. It’s something of an anomaly in Ohio, someone who looks forward to the winter… But without 3 Trackers and the community it provides, her winters would look quite different.
The mixed ability group is a large part of what she appreciates within 4 Trackers. It’s not competitive, not high-stakes, just a group of people who come out and have fun. Adaptive recreational sports, she says, are important in ways that go beyond competition or performance. The casual nature of it is the feature, the preference, not a limitation. In warmer months, she goes birding at the local park, and sometimes bikes. But skiing is her main sport, winter is her season, and Brandywine is close enough to be ordinary.
